Kanye's break includes cancelling tour with Lady Gaga

Thank God, Kanye West is giving the world a break.
He and Lady Gaga's scheduled tour has been canceled, according to a Live Nation announcement Thursday night in a brief statement that doesn't offer an explanation.
However, the man of hour at the MTV Video Music Awards confessed to Jay Leno last month that he hadn't taken time to grieve after his mother died and hinted that a break would be coming. A much-needed break if he has is so lacking in maturity that he had to interrupt someone's acceptance speech.
So we can all breathe a collective sigh of relief now - he won't be upstaging Lady Gaga for awhile.

My take: Punish Polanski once and for all

I've heard enough about Roman Polanski.
According to published reports, the acclaimed filmmaker was accused in 1977 of giving drugs and alcohol to a 13-year-old girl and then having sex with her. Initially he was indicted on six felony counts, including rape by use of drugs, child molesting and sodomy. He pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of unlawful sexual intercourse in exchange for having the rest of the charges dropped. The judge agreed to send Polanski to prison for a 90-day psychiatric evaluation, but Polanski was released after just 42 days and he fled the country before sentencing. Apparently, he found out the judge was supposedly going to add more prison time so he went to France.
He is a criminal. Plain and simple. I fail to see how there can be any debate about this.
His defenders say it's been 30-plus years, let it go. He's a great filmmaker, let it go. His victim wants it to be over, let it go. The prosecutor lied to a film crew for a documentary about Polanski, he should be released. And, my personal favorite quote of the week from Whoopi Goldberg on "The View,": It wasn't rape, rape." (Goldberg has 'clarified' her comments recently. Good for her.)
Please.
A crime is a crime, and a criminal who flees should not be given two thumbs up and a gold statue for avoiding prison for 30-plus years. He should have served his sentence. If Swiss authorities decide to send Polanski back to the U.S., he should face the original 6 charges, plus whatever federal prosecutors can dream up for him leaving the country and ditching sentencing.
Debate continues, and probably will for weeks to come, on whether or not he should be punished. But he committed a crime, like any other person and, like any one of us, he should be brought to justice.
There's no Oscar for hiding from the law.

'Idol' runner-up 'comes out' to Rolling Stone

By LORENA BLAS
Gannett News Service

Adam Lambert is gay.

The “American Idol” Season 8 runner-up ends any speculation in the next issue of Rolling Stone, out Friday. “I don’t think it should be a surprise for anyone to hear I’m gay.” He explains: “I’ve been living in Los Angeles for eight years as a gay man. I’ve been at clubs drunk making out with somebody in the corner.”

The “Idol” favorite, who finished in second place after Kris Allen, says, “Right after the finale, I almost started talking about it to the reporters, but I thought, ‘I’m going to wait for Rolling Stone, that will be cooler.’ ” He adds, “I’m proud of my sexuality.”

Still, Lambert, 27, says he doesn’t mind attention from the opposite sex. “I loved it this season when the girls went crazy for me,” he says. “As far as I’m concerned, it’s all hot.”

But exactly what is his type? When “Idol” producers put him in a room to share with Allen, Lambert says his first thought was, “They put me with the cute guy. Distracting! He’s the one guy I found attractive in the whole group on the show: nice, nonchalant, pretty and totally my type — except that he has a wife. I mean he’s open-minded and liberal, but he’s definitely 100 percent straight.”

As for the scandal over photos of Lambert in drag that surfaced on the Internet in March, he says, he forgot to remove photos from his profile on a social network for the Burning Man festival in Nevada.

“Wasn’t ready for that,” he tells RS of the photos of him in costume making out with his ex. He was worried people would think the drag ensemble was typical of him. “I’ve only dressed in drag three or four times. ... I don’t tuck and wear breasts, that’s not me.”

Though Lambert supports the gay-rights movement, he doesn’t want to be its poster boy. “I’m trying to be a singer, not a civil rights leader.”

Stereotypes about gays do annoy Lambert. “Clay Aiken’s gay, and I’m gay, and we couldn’t be more different. The only thing that is the same about everyone in the gay community is that we’re gay. ... Why can’t we talk about a human community?”

In addition to his homosexuality, Lambert shares other personal details with RS.

At 21, he was in a European tour of “Hair” for six months. That was when he dyed his hair black. In Germany, he started smoking pot and tried Ecstasy. But he does have limits. Among his dislikes: cocaine.

“That drug is such a reflection of the lack of self-esteem and control people have over themselves and their lives,” he says.

Sutherland charged in head-butt claim

By COLLEEN LONG
Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK — Kiefer Sutherland was charged with misdemeanor assault Thursday for allegedly head-butting a fashion designer at a Manhattan nightclub.

The star of Fox television’s “24” reported to a lower Manhattan police station in a Lincoln Town Car alongside his lawyers, but he did not speak to reporters.

Sutherland, 42, was interviewed by investigators, given a ticket, ordered to appear in court June 22 and released on his own recognizance. The minor charge is akin to a speeding ticket.

But the case could create another major legal hassle for Sutherland, who served 48 days in jail on a drunken-driving charge in California last year.

The designer, Jack McCollough of the high-end Proenza Schouler fashion house, claims Sutherland attacked him after an argument, leaving him with a cut on his face. The incident happened about 2 a.m. Tuesday.

Detectives were planning to question actress Brooke Shields as a witness because she was at the trendy SoHo nightspot SubMercer, in the basement of the Mercer Hotel, where the altercation took place. Drinks at the ultra-hip club cost around $15.

No decision has been made on whether the charge will affect Sutherland’s probation for a drunken-driving conviction in Los Angeles, said Frank Mateljan, a spokesman for the Los Angeles City Attorney.

Sutherland pleaded no contest to driving with a blood-alcohol level above the legal limit of 0.08 percent.

He was sentenced to 30 days, in addition to 18 days for violating probation in a 2004 drunken-driving arrest.

Representatives for Sutherland, Shields and McCollough did not return several calls seeking comment.

Sutherland, who plays dashing federal counterterrorism agent Jack Bauer on “24,” won a Golden Globe and an Emmy for best actor, and has been nominated multiple times for his work on the wildly popular show. His gritty portrayal of the counterterrorism agent has made Bauer an iconic character.

The current season — the show’s seventh — finds Bauer scrambling through Washington to save the world from its latest bad day. Sutherland also has signed on for an eighth season. The show airs on Mondays.

Chris Brown's lawyer wants LAPD records

By ANTHONY McCARTNEY
The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — Chris Brown’s attorney is seeking police records to try to find out who leaked information about the alleged beating of Rihanna.

Attorney Mark Geragos filed a motion Wednesday in Los Angeles, seeking police personnel and investigative records.

Geragos wrote that he wants the documents to see if he can discredit or attack the credibility of police witnesses during a preliminary hearing in early June. Geragos wrote that if the files contain evidence of police misconduct, they may form a basis for the case against the R&B singer to be dismissed.

He also wants the files of a police investigation into the leaking of a photo of a bruised and battered Rihanna that was leaked to celebrity gossip Web site TMZ.

Brown, 20, remains free on bail after his Feb. 8 arrest with his then-girlfriend.

Geragos wrote in the filing that he believes a Los Angeles Police Department officer sold the photo to TMZ.

However the site acquired the photo, Brown’s attorney wrote that it has been damaging to the singer’s case.

“The purpose of the leak was necessarily for profit and to vilify Mr. Brown and poison the potential jury pool,” Geragos wrote.

Promoter: Rihanna shelves May concert

By BARBARA SURK
The Associated Press

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Rihanna has shelved plans for a concert later this month in Dubai because the timing was “inappropriate,” a Middle East concert promoter said Tuesday.
Yassin Matbouly, managing director of Vibe Entertainment Management Agency, said the Dubai-based promoter got “nothing in writing” from Rihanna’s agents but was made to understand from managers negotiating the May 28 gig in the Gulf sheikdom that it won’t work out.
The development came shortly after the pop star made a comeback on the red carpet in New York, arriving late Monday at the annual Costume Institute of The Metropolitan Museum gala. She did not speak to the press.
The Dubai concert was to be Rihanna’s first singing performance since her then-boyfriend Chris Brown was accused of beating her up in February.
Brown was arrested Feb. 8 and charged with felony assault and making criminal threats. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges. May 28 is also the date due for a hearing in Brown’s case.
Matbouly said he was not aware of any connection between the two events.
He said May 28 was Vibe’s preferred date to host Rihanna in Dubai, but in a month and a half of negotiations with Rihanna, her managers never fully committed to it.
“We put an offer across with a large amount of money, and it unfortunately did not happen,” Matbouly said. “We heard it was inappropriate timing for her to have a public concert.”
He added the company remains interested in hosting Rihanna in the region and will try to reschedule the concert.

Man convicted of stalking Tyra Banks

By SAMUEL MAULL
The Associated Press
NEW YORK — A Georgia man who told police he and Tyra Banks “had a thing together” was convicted Thursday of stalking the supermodel-turned-TV host.
Brady Green, 39, of Dublin, Ga., was convicted by Manhattan Criminal Court Judge James Burke, who heard the case without a jury, of stalking, harassment, criminal trespass and attempted aggravated harassment.
Green faces as many as 90 days in jail when he is sentenced on June 18. His lawyer said an appeal is planned.
Banks testified that she feared for her safety, and for that of her staff and family.
Authorities said Green, 39, repeatedly called Banks’ studio, showed up there, and sent her flowers and letters.
Green was arrested March 18, 2008, at a McDonald’s restaurant near Banks’ studio in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan. He told officers he and Banks “had a thing together,” police said.
Banks said she was about to leave the studio that day when her staff warned her about Green. She said they had previously shown her Green’s photograph, told her he had threatened one of her employees and was “somebody I should watch out for.”
The former Sports Illustrated cover girl said she told officers at the scene that she was scared.
“I didn’t know what to do. How do I live my life when I leave this building? I had never experienced anything like this before,” she said.
Calm and smiling frequently as she testified, Banks said security “has changed significantly” around her and her workplaces because of Green.
She said that her company has hired more security staff and that her studio audiences are vetted more thoroughly.
Banks said she is now followed everywhere by security guards, even when she runs and exercises outdoors. Even though she is a public person, “I don’t live that kind of sheltered, protected life,” she said. “I like to walk around.”
Green testified that Banks’ shows on racism and homelessness had moved him and he wanted to contact her. He said his attempts to get tickets for her show had been misunderstood.
He also said he never threatened Banks, never intended to scare her and never tried to date her.
Assistant District Attorney Sean McMahon got Green to admit that he rode a bus for four days from Los Angeles to New York, where he had no friends, relatives and no job, and that the first he thing he did was go to the building that houses Banks’ studio.
Banks is executive producer and host of two popular TV shows, “America’s Next Top Model” and “The Tyra Banks Show.”

Father of younger Spears' baby injured in crash

The Associated Press
OSCEOLA, La. — Casey Aldridge, the father of actress Jamie Lynn Spears’ baby, and two of his four passengers were thrown from his 2008 Ford F-250 pickup when it rolled over in Louisiana, state police said Monday. No one in the truck was wearing a seat belt.
Trooper Mark Dennis said Aldridge, 19, suffered moderate injuries. He was taken to Riverrun Medical Center in nearby Vidalia, then moved to an undisclosed hospital, Dennis said.
The wreck happened about 1:30 a.m. Sunday on a highway 60 miles southeast of Monroe, near the Mississippi state line. Dennis said the passengers, men aged 19 to 23, refused treatment for minor injuries.
“The fact that three of these guys survived ejection totally defies the odds,” he said.
Investigators did not find cause to suspect drugs or alcohol, but cited Aldridge for careless driving, Dennis said. No one was cited for not wearing a seat belt.
Aldridge, a pipe-layer from Liberty, Miss., is the father of Maddie Briann Spears, born last June. Spears, 18, is the star of the Nickelodeon TV series “Zoey 101” and the sister of singer Britney Spears.
The crash happened in Tensas Parish down Louisiana Highway 606 near a country club on the inside shore of Lake Bruin, a clear oxbow lake popular for boating, fishing and swimming.
Dennis said the truck went off the right side of the highway and into a ditch, overcorrected, ran off the left side of the highway and flipped at least once.

Indian police end probe of 'Slumdog' star's dad

By ERIKA KINETZ
The Associated Press

MUMBAI, India — Indian police said Thursday they would not charge the father of a child star in the hit movie “Slumdog Millionaire,” and ended their investigation into claims he tried to sell his 9-year-old girl to a reporter posing as a wealthy sheik.
Rubina Ali’s estranged mother, Khurshid Monish Dewade, filed a complaint against the girl’s father on Sunday, after the British tabloid News of the World reported that he offered to give Ali up for adoption in exchange for $400,000, police said.
The newspaper — owned by News International Ltd., the main British subsidiary of News Corp., which also owns “Slumdog” distributor Fox Searchlight Pictures — said the deal was allegedly offered to one of its reporters.
The father, Rafiq Qureshi, has denied any wrongdoing.
The accusations further complicated the lives of the families of the slum-dwelling child stars, who have come under intense scrutiny since the movie skyrocketed to Oscar-winning fame and grossed more than $300 million worldwide.
“There is not any crime. The matter is closed,” said Rahim Shaikh, the senior police inspector in Mumbai’s Nirmal Nagar, where the claim against Qureshi was processed.
No charges have been filed, he added.
Police questioned Qureshi but were unable to track down the three journalists who carried out the alleged sting.
Officers looked for them at the Leela, a five-star hotel where the report said they met Qureshi but they had already left, Shaikh said.
Police traced two mobile phone numbers the trio gave the hotel to local Vodafone SIM cards, which were activated on April 16 and deactivated on April 19.
Indian police made no further efforts to contact the journalists or News of the World in England, Shaikh added.
“The matter is closed. No money changed hands. Rubina is here. There is no crime,” he said.
After the report, Rubina’s estranged mother thanked News of the World “for bringing this matter to light.”
“You have come like angels for me and my daughter and saved her from ending up God knows where,” she told the paper. “Who knows who Rubina would have been sold to, or what would have happened to my child if you hadn’t exposed Rafiq.”
Dewade could not be reached for comment Thursday.

Gypsy guitarist plays The Oasis Room

NEW LONDON, CT — Juno Award-winning guitarist Jesse Cook, will play the Garde’s Oasis Room on April 2 at 8 p.m.

Co-presented with Kitchings Productions, Jesse Cook and his quartet will perform their unique world music blend of jazz, gypsy and Latin sounds. The Oasis Room, located across from the Garde Theater mezzanine, is being refurbished as an intimate 120-seat theater for music, comedy and theater.

Cook’s passion for musical exploration and fusion is captured in six critically acclaimed studio albums. In addition to headlining concerts and festivals, he has opened for such legends as B.B. King, Ray Charles and Diana Krall. He has performed with British soprano Charlotte Church on the "Tonight Show" and toured with legendary Irish band "The Chieftains."

In 2001, Cook won his first Juno Award in the Best Instrumental Album category for “Free Fall.” Most recently he has been nominated for two 2008 Juno awards, for his 2007 release “Frontiers” (World Music Album of the Year) and for the incredible DVD “One Night at the Metropolis” (Music DVD of the Year) which captures a spectacular concert during the 2006 Montreal Jazz Festival.

Born in Paris in 1964, guitarist Jesse Cook grew up in southern France where he spent many summers, wandering the streets among the Gypsies who inhabit the area, soaking up the atmosphere and listening to the likes of Nicolas Reyes, lead singer of the flamenco group “Gipsy Kings,” who just happened to live next door.

Cook first picked up a toy guitar at the age of 3 to mimic the sounds of Gypsy guitar legend Manitas de Plata. He later moved to Toronto studying at the esteemed Eli Kassner Guitar Academy.

“People were kind of tossing around this term ‘virtuoso’ when I was a kid,” Cook recalls, “I am not sure. I was too undisciplined, I never practiced my scales and I played what I wanted to play. I would learn quickly and then have fun with it.”

He continued his studies in classical and jazz guitar at some of North America’s most prestigious music schools, while immersing himself in the oral traditions of Gypsy music. This unusual dichotomy paid dividends in his wide range of musical tastes that he has blended into his unique style of rumba flamenco.

Tickets for Jesse Cook are $40 and are available for sale at the Garde Arts Center Box Office, 325 State Street, New London. Tickets may also be purchased by phone at (860) 444-7373 x1, or on-line at www.gardearts.org
